Phoenix Bikes opened its doors in March 2007 as a nonprofit organization in Arlington, Va. A dedicated group of citizens and cyclists grew the shop from the ashes of Community Spokes, a community bike shop sponsored by the Arlington County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. Based in a small brick building in Barcroft Park, Phoenix Bikes staff and volunteers operate youth development programs for middle and high school students, host workshops and shop nights for anyone interested in bicycles in the community, and coordinate community events. If you’ve not visited them before, this season is a great one to get to know them and get biking.
Local families love Phoenix Bikes.
“Almost every season, our daughter grows out of a bike. She donates it to Phoenix, they take her old bike and pretty it up for another young rider. It’s a great way for kids to experience the cycle of giving.” (Arlington Parent)
