National Geographic’s Giant Traveling Map of North America is headed to Arlington’s own Tuckahoe Elementary School. The map, measuring 26 feet by 35 feet and weighing 102 lbs., will be on display is the school’s gymnasium from Nov. 29 – Dec. 10.
Produced by National Geographic Live, to tour the country’s schools, will bring hands- and feet-on geography education to 300,000 students each year.
“Designed to promote geographic literacy by igniting interest in geography, the maps and accompanying activities incorporate physical movement and games to teach students place names, physical geography, and cultural geography as well as map reading skills”. (via NatGeo)
Tuckahoe Assistant Principal Mitch Pascal, says “staff at meetings have been enthusiastic. Our Social Studies Lead Teacher has worked with our grade level teams and PE staff to have lessons on hand. Teachers will work with their classes on the map for the first portion of their PE classes and then our PE teachers will continue working with each class in PE activities”.
What the teachers think?
“This is really pretty cool!”
What else is cool?
