Arlington Public Schools is now offering FREE courses to help parents deal with a wide range of issues.

Feb. 4
Parenting with Success: The Teen Years, 7 p.m.

Join other Arlington parents to learn about a practical approach to guiding your teen or pre-teen to be responsible, cooperative, and independent based on the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) Curriculum. Build strong, positive relationships with your teen. Prepare yourself for talking about tough topics with your child. Learn skills and ideas to help you be the best parent you can be. Parent Chat Workshops: Positive Discipline, 6:30 p.m.

Understanding Special Education, 7 p.m.

This course is designed to support families and staff members in understanding special education services to meet the unique needs of students (2-21) with disabilities. The course will include a brief overview of special education legislation and the steps in the �special education cycle� � from referral, evaluation, eligibility determination and service provision; and address how parents can be active participants throughout the cycle. What Every Parent Should Know About Teenage Pregnancy, 7:30 p.m.

Are you a parent of a teenager or pre-teen? Are you ready to be a grandparent? Learn about the status of adolescent pregnancy in Arlington and the resources that are available. Here�s an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about teenage pregnancy and hear what you can do to help prevent this from happening in your family. Becoming an Active Member of Your Childs IEP Team, 10 a.m.

Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the Individualized Education Programs provided for students with disabilities requiring special education services. This course will provide a detailed overview of components of the IEP, including stating present levels of performance, developing measurable goals, and identifying required services, modifications and accommodations. Parents will learn about roles of various IEP Team Members, what to expect at and how to prepare for IEP meetings, and how to actively and effectively participate as a member of the IEP Team.
